The Regional Challenge Fund (RCF) proudly marked another milestone in strengthening vocational education in the Western Balkans with the official inauguration of the new Multimedia Laboratory at the University Metropolitan Tirana (UMT). This state-of-the-art facility was made possible through the RCF grant and reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting innovative, labour-market-oriented training across the region.
Held at the UMT campus, the launch event gathered key stakeholders—government representatives, international partners, private sector actors, academic staff, and students—demonstrating strong multisectoral support for dual education reform in Albania.
The Multimedia Laboratory is part of a broader RCF-backed initiative aimed at addressing skill gaps in Albania’s fast-growing ICT and tourism sectors. Equipped with the latest technology and designed to foster hands-on, job-ready competencies, the lab will serve as a hub for innovation and applied learning.
Prof. Dr. Nikolla Civici, Rector of UMT, opened the event with remarks highlighting the importance of industry-education collaboration. “This investment represents our shared commitment to bridging the gap between education and the labor market,” he said. “We are proud to contribute to a new era of work-based learning in Albania” Civici stated.
“This is not just a project; it’s a model for how we can strengthen economic development through education,” stated RCF Regional Coordinator Renato Vasili.
UMT’s project was selected through the RCF’s competitive application process, standing out for its strong consortium and inclusive training approach. The consortium includes Albanian Business Partner, Revo Hospitality Group, Maritim Plaza Hotel, Softmogul, and Albacademy, all of which bring vital expertise and a shared vision to upskill the future workforce.

These programs are tailored to meet real labour market needs while fostering youth employability and increasing opportunities for women and underrepresented groups.
“This project exemplifies how international cooperation can lead to tangible improvements in local education systems,” said Dr. Iven Schad, Head of German Cooperation at the German Embassy in Albania.
This facility is poised to become a national reference point for modern vocational education, a testament to what is possible when education and industry co-create solutions for the future.
